A Place to Gather: Comfort and Style in the Fraser Valley

Between the hills of British Columbia’s Fraser Valley sits a home, but not just any home. “It’s our happy place; we even have a sign,” says Judy, the homeowner. The air smells like cinnamon and brown sugar. Dutch wooden shoes and pictures of grandchildren line the shelves, and a refreshing breeze passes through the home from the front to back doors thanks to their newly installed Phantom Screens.

The front door, a solid piece of dark wood, has been adorned with a new retractable door screen with a woodgrain finish that blends so seamlessly that Judy didn’t even realize the installation was complete when she drove up from work.

“You didn’t even realize it was there, it blends in so well,” she says, sitting in their custom-built home.

“Just the name Phantom, it tells you right there. You don’t even know that they’re there.” Her husband, Jeff, laughs.

The door screens weren’t the only new addition to the family home. Their outdoor patio space is now the ultimate comfort zone with a new dual roller system, including luxury vinyl, and their large portrait window outfitted with a motorized screen with cable guide

“The plan is to spend more time out here later into the year. Both of our boys are into sports, we have a little TV here, so we can watch a hockey game, baseball playoffs, the football game, whatever it is. Dad and the boys can be out here, comfortable and warm, and watch the game.” Judy said with an excited smile.

This new screened patio space is needed. “There are times when we have twenty-five to thirty people here, and you just want everybody to be in the same room,” Judy explains. With four grandkids, space is of the essence for this growing family and these proud grandparents who love to host and entertain.

It’s not just their outdoor space that’s ready for entertaining. With the cable guide system in their living room, they can now enjoy a morning coffee or a cozy Saturday without having to worry about their furniture or paintings fading or a space that’s too hot to enjoy comfortably.

“With the screens down, you can sit here, you can read, you can watch TV, you can just enjoy your morning without the glare, without the heat. It’s made life better just because we don’t have that annoying brightness, glare, and heat in the morning. You can just sit and watch the news, read your book, or just sit in quiet and have your coffee. So it’s been good.” Judy explains.

Judy offers us a cinnamon bun that you’re not allowed to say no to (you wouldn’t want to; I’m still thinking about them). It makes the whole space feel inviting and warm. The doors are open, and the breeze trickles in, and through the large living room window, you can see the iconic Mount Cheam. At this moment, it’s easy to see why their home is the best stop for all their hosting.

“We’ve moved around to a few different places. But this is the place we plan to stay at till we can’t stay here anymore.” Jeff and Judy tell us. “We always come back here, and we always say, you know what, nothing beats living here. This is home.”
